Artist's Biography
Contemporary British artist, Jacqueline Hammond, is renowned for producing strong, punchy images that are rich in texture and colour. A prolific painter and multidisciplinary artist, she exhibits widely and is commissioned by individual clients, collectors and high profile brands. She works from her studio and gallery space on Brighton seafront at JAG Gallery on Madeira Drive.
Immediate inspiration comes from direct observation: subject matter is plucked from the world encountered every day. Some ideas evolve, others are reactionary. More thought-provoking themes explore today’s society, the media and cultural theory.
Whether inspired by the street or the sea, Jacqueline’s work has an edge: her paintings are consistently striking. Her natural disposition is to let the paint dictate the creative process, trusting the medium and her mind’s eye to translate the vision.
Born in Romsey, Hampshire in 1973, she spent her childhood in Devon. Early artistic memories include spending hours watching her Grandfather paint. After completing an A-level in Graphic Design, then a Bachelor of Arts – Combined Honours in Media/Cultural Studies at the University of Birmingham, she always knew she would indeed return to art as her true love.

A versatile artist and illustrator specialising in figurative fine art paintings that are both commercial and inventive. Skilled at creating strong images that display an acute sense of composition, a vibrant use of colour, and speak for themselves; her works have a wide appeal and are ideal for use in print. Several works are available for licensing purposes and she is currently available for commissions, projects and design briefs.
Working in the mediums of acrylics, oils, watercolour and pen & ink, Jacqueline's portfolio contains artworks in a variety of styles and subjects. While some artists can spend a lifetime perfecting a single style, others are able to turn their hand to anything that takes their fancy with alarming consistency. Themes explored include a colourful fat 1950’s car orientated Cuban series, indulgent submersion in abstract landscapes and sky formations, avid concentration on perspective in architecture and finely captured, detailed figurative work, such as the ‘Life’s A Beach Series’ gives a bird’s eye view of people on the whole stretch of Brighton beach. Tidal seashore scenes feature the starling’s sunset spectacle and studies of people’s silhouettes on the sea groynes capture the essence of youth. The quirky Pebble Heads series is proving to be popular and collectible, with Pebble Head Portrait commissions rolling in!
Taking part in The Seeking Picasso Competition in 2007 led to representation by The McNeill Gallery in Hertfordshire, she featured in the ‘Not the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition.’ This led to a solo exhibition. Then several more exhibitions and many, many more paintings! A regular to Brighton Artists Open Houses and well known for her fresh way of depicting Brighton, which led to her current residency by the sea at JAG Gallery on Brighton’s Madeira Drive. The gallery and open studios are open to the public every day and visitors are welcome to watch artists at work.
